Nico Myburgh takes the reins as hotel manager at Cape Town’s Best Address

After a five-year tenure at Sun International’s iconic The Palace of the Lost City at Sun City, Nico Myburgh has joined the inspired team as Hotel Manager at another of Sun International’s SunLux properties, The Table Bay at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town.  While both The Table Bay and The Palace are amongst South Africa’s premier hotels, attracting discerning local and international guests, Myburgh admits to be captivated about working at Cape Town’s “Best Address”.

 

“There is something truly unique about this hotel which quite simply captures your heart and imagination, whether you work here or you’re a guest. The special energy that fills the hotel, the exceptionally passionate people who keep the cogs turning seamlessly and the graciousness of our guests is captivating. It is like the world comes to you; it is absolutely wonderful to meet so many different people from across the world on a daily basis. Of course, the exquisite location of The Table Bay is alluring as well,” smiles Myburgh, who is reveling at living in the Western Cape once again.

 

He started his career in 1992 at another hotel group while completing his in service training in the human resources department of the hotel. “I immediately took interest in the operational side and knew I had found my calling. That was 25 years ago. I spent 16 years with other hotel groups before joining Sun International.

Working at a number of illustrious hotels during his career, he has been privileged to meet and host celebrities, heads of state and other high profile guests; amongst whom have Queen Elizabeth; Nelson Mandela; Pavarotti; the band members of Kings of Chaos; Tina Turner; Michael Buble and members of the Saudi Royalty to mention but a few.

 

“That is the thing about this industry. You are always on stage. You need to be prepared because you just never know who you are going to meet. It is incredibly exciting but it is also demanding. You have to be on your toes at all times otherwise it is easy to become overwhelmed. Many people that are attracted to this industry because of the excitement don’t realize this. To survive, or rather thrive, in this trade, you have to be collected and be prepared for almost anything and anyone,” he says.

Looking ahead, Myburgh has his sights set on one day becoming a General Manager of one of Sun International’s full service properties. Until then, he is enjoying the challenges and immense rewards of being part of The Table Bay family. He is also thoroughly enjoying rediscovering the Cape and exploring new food and cultural destinations.
